Volunteerism in Latin Amercia focus of Cuso’s first memorial research fellowship


Cuso International has announced the recipient of the first annual Bob Ward Memorial Fellowship to support outstanding research on the role and impact of volunteers in international development.
The award celebrates the legacy of Bob Ward, a former co-chair of Cuso International.
Alexis Garcia is a community development consultant and social scientist who is passionate about bringing about social change, contributing to social policy and advocating for the empowerment of communities around the world. Alexis is also a former Cuso overseas volunteer.
The winning independent research study will study the role of international volunteerism in successful community stories in Latin America. The objective of the study is to develop knowledge regarding the link between international volunteerism and social transformation.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with local communities abroad, partners, and volunteers, and will encompass participatory and democratic practices. The information gathered will contribute bridging practice and policy for international volunteerism.
Valued at a maximum amount of $25,000 for up to one year, the award is intended to allow the recipient to make a significant contribution to the sector through research that demonstrate the impact of volunteering and advance our understanding of related issues of policy and practice.
